    Casa Carlos, dating to the early 1800s, is one of the few properties in Taos available for rental that is listed in both the National Register of Historic Places (United States Department of Interior) and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties. The former home and studio of Charles “Carlos” Berninghaus, a noted Taos artist and son of Oscar Berninghaus, who was one of the founders of the Taos art colony in the 1920s. This beautiful example of an adobe casita was authentically restored and beautifully landscaped by its former owner, the founder of Taos’ El Monte Sagrado Resort. The interior, exterior and grounds have been carefully preserved and methodically tended to make this home a treasure for returning guests who call Casa Carlos their “home away from home”. A complete, historically sensitive renovation of all interior spaces was completed in 2020. A rare feature for a Taos vacation rental is the home’s private walled garden, which features a gorgeous pond, trickling water, shade trees, diverse and flowering plant life, visits from many beautiful varieties of birds and butterflies, and a grassy area. A private hot tub, multiple seating areas, an outdoor gas grill, and exterior lighting are also features of the garden. The current owners have refurnished the home in colonial period Mexican, Indian, Indonesian/Dutch, Romanian and California Rancho Monterey antique furnishings, as well as original art and print photography from Mexico and the Southwest.
    The home features a beautiful King bedroom, and a 2nd bedroom containing a queen size bed, a mock kiva fireplace and historic charm.

    The home is an easy stroll into town and Taos Plaza for meals, or utilize the home’s fully equipped modern kitchen to dine in, or grill outside and dine al fresco in the garden. The home is stocked with games, puzzles, playing cards/ poker chips, books, DVDs/movies, vinyl records and turntable, and cable/Blue Ray entertainment system for family time and relaxation in the beautifully furnished living area, which features coved viga ceilings, a kiva fireplace, and abundant natural light.

    Additional architectural features include historically preserved coved and viga ceilings throughout, a gas kiva fireplace, custom ironwork, vintage Spanish Colonial lighting, radiant heated Saltillo tile floors, 3 foot thick 200 year old adobe walls, vintage and historical doors, and custom made cement tilework from San Luis Potosi, Mexico in the kitchen and bathroom.

    PREMIERE PROPERTIES POLICIES

    PREMIERE PROPERTIES POLICIES CHECK IN: Check-in is any time after 4 pm. Check-out is no later than 10:00 am so housekeeping can be ready for next party arrival at 4:00 pm.

    CUSTOMER SERVICE: Each property has a private caretaker to assist guests with maintenance issues, lost keys, directions, etc. Guest is to contact caretaker for such issues. If there is an urgent matter and caretaker does not respond with 30 minutes guest should then call Premiere at 800-987-8423.

    DEPARTURE: Property is to be left in good order by following the printed guidelines in each home. Should the guidelines be missing common sense should rule. Should property be left in poor order please read “SECURITY DEPOSIT” below.

    GUEST POLICY: Should there be more overnight guests (including children) other than number disclosed in contract (other than prior approved visits) the party will be required to immediately vacate the premises without refund and full security deposit will be forfeited. If a large party gathers without prior disclosure to “Premiere” the full security deposit shall be forfeited, and party will immediately terminate.

    CANCELLATION POLICY: More than 30 days before arrival (60 days Xmas/NY’s, Spring Break, and reservations of 14 or more nights) cancellation fee is 21% of total reservation. Less than 30 days before arrival, (60 days Xmas/NY’s, Spring Break, and reservations of 14 or more nights) forfeiture of 100% of full reservation unless property is rebooked for entire stay at same rate. If booked for less, refund portion will be prorated (less the 21% cancellation fee). There are no refunds for late arrival or early departure.

    PAYMENT POLICY: All funds are due within 30 days of arrival (60 days Christmas, New Year, Spring Break and reservations of 14 or more day). 50% deposit will be charged at time of booking if outside of 30 days (60 days Christmas, New Year, Spring Break and reservations of 14 or more days.

    PET POLICY: We allow 1 or 2 dogs in our “Pet Friendly” properties. We have additional pet fees that are calculated on the website after selecting number of Dogs. 1 Dog is $15/night plus tax and 2 Dogs will be $25/night plus tax. We also have our guests fill out an additional pet agreement when bringing dog(s) to the property.

    SECURITY DEPOSIT PER DWELLING: Debit Cards will be pre-authorized for $525. Should damages or extra cleaning occur, my credit/debit card will be charged $500.00 dollars plus a $25.00 dollar non-refundable service charge. Once cost of damage/extra cleaning has been finalized, guest will be refunded the difference if less than $500 or charged extra if damage is more than $500. Evidence of unauthorized pets or smoking in the house will result in forfeiture of full security deposit. (see direction sheet for partial explanation of possible damages) Premiere Properties will be held harmless and will not be involved in damage negotiations. WAIVER OF LIABILITY: This property is privately owned & cared for. Premiere Properties is acting as Reservation Service only for the use of the subject property. For homes with hot tubs, I understand the risks of hot tub/Jacuzzi use and recognize that for some people adverse reactions can occur, including but not limited to skin rash. Neither Premiere Properties, nor the Owner or their Agents will be held liable or responsible for personal injury, accidents, loss of life, valuables, or personal property due to fire, theft, neglect, or any catastrophe or natural disaster which might occur at the above-named property during the above stated time period. If this property becomes unavailable, due to unforeseen circumstances, I understand Premiere Properties will do all possible to move my party to an equal or upgraded option.

    Very warm and cozy. This is one of the nicest for rent by owner places I have stayed. It is very warm and cozy. The backyard is a sanctuary. The place is also a short walk to the plaza. - M. Pendleton

    Beyond expectation! From the moment I set foot in Casa Carlos, I knew I was in for a relaxing treat. The decor is lovely and soothing; the furniture is comfortable; the mattress is nice and firm; the linens are fluffy. The kitchen is well-stocked with cooking implements and dishes. The dishwasher and w/d work great. The garden tub is spacious and the shower has plenty of water pressure. The hot tub hit the spot, and the backyard is great for relaxing with a cup of tea or coffee while listening to the fountain gurgle. (As a geriatric provider, I would note that this is not a walker or wheelchair appropriate site due to steps leading down into the casa as well as bathtub accessibility; not a criticism, just an observation.)     Perfect in every way. The unit was beautiful and the courtyard in the back was an added bonus! We enjoyed the hot tub and quiet evenings listening to the lovely water feature in the extremely well landscaped courtyard. The size of the unit was just perfect for the two of us. It even had a desk where I could set up my laptop. The kitchen was well equipped and a pleasure to work in although breakfast was the only meal we cooked. We took advantage of all the great dining spots in Taos and enjoyed the great food and great service. The management company that takes care of this unit is top notch. Everything was clean and well supplied. Taos is a charming little town with lots to do and this unit is within walking distance of the Plaza as well as some museums, galleries, restaurants and shops. I would love to come back and stay longer than 9 nights next year. We loved it! - T. Slaughter

    Taos Gem! Our stay at Casa Carlos exceeded our expectations. It's a beautiful, historic building that has been lovingly restored and impeccably maintained. The furnishings are beautiful and make for a very comfortable stay. It's a short walk to the historic plaza where you can find just about anything your heart desires.     This was our second stay at Casa Carlos. We are enchanted by Taos and try to get there often. The current owners have put a lot of thought and work into remodeling the bathroom and the delightful back garden. Since the Casa is so close to town, we can leave the car and walk to everything in the historic town center. The management company does outstanding work to keep the home spotless and kitchen cupboards well supplied. A magic place for two to get away and experience adobe life - T. Martin

    A magical Christmas! Casa Carlos is even better in person than in pictures. It is a charming and well appointed vacation home that is totally private and quiet yet conveniently located to everything. The home is small but lives much larger than it looks. There were 2 adults and 2 teens staying for a week and we never felt crowded. The kitchen is bright, lovely and comfortable for real cooking. We enjoyed hot tubbing in the snowy backyard after skiing. The home was decorated with a Christmas tree when we arrived which we thought was a very nice touch and on one of our first days the owners dropped a bottle of wine on our doorstep on their way through town.     Amazing! Try as we might to make things difficult, ya'll made it a fantastic vacation. Great spot just far enough away from the square to be quiet and comfortable yet within easy walking distance....the house was charming and the backyard a small slice of heaven!     Every few hours during our stay we would remark on how beautuful and tasteful the house is. The local art and furniture are exquisite, the garden is lovely, the well chosen local books are a very thoughtful touch and everything was clean and well equipped .     Brand new on the market after a 3 year respite, Casa Carlos has new owners and soon guests will be coming and sending their reviews.
