Taos Area Skiing

What do clear desert skies and cold nights make? Great snow and powder! That’s why the Blake family founded Taos Ski Valley Resort in 1955. They saw the potential for wonderful and fun skiing in a beautiful location on the tallest mountains in New Mexico. But skiing didn’t stop there! You can also choose from the nearby resorts Red River, Angel Fire and Sipapu.

With an average annual snowfall of about 300 inches and 305 plus days of sunshine a year, Taos Ski Valley is a favorite among skiers and snowboarders. Still family owned and operated, it’s a short drive from downtown Taos. With 110 trails and 13 lifts, Taos Ski Valley offers all levels of skiing and snowboarding. Experts can enjoy the challenging “hike to” terrain on the mountain. Taos Ski Valley celebrates Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve with a special torchlight parade down the mountain. You’ll find a variety of restaurants and other activities located in the ski village and on the mountain.

Red River Ski Area

Located about an hour north of Taos on the Enchanted Circle, Red River Ski Area offers 7 lifts with 57 trails at all levels and several terrain parks. The town of Red River has a real western atmosphere with many options for après ski shopping, dining and nightlife.

Angel Fire

Located east of Taos on Highway 63, Angel Fire is another wonderful family ski resort with 74 trails, 7 lifts and 3 freestyle terrain parks. Other favorite winter activities include cross country skiing, glade skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobile rides, and horse drawn sleigh rides. The town offers dining and shopping as well.

Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort

This family owned resort is located about 20 miles southeast of Taos. Surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Carson National Forest, the resort has over 40 trails, four lifts and two terrain parks. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing options are also located nearby. Mountain dining is available at the base area.

Just 3 miles past Red River cross country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts can enjoy the Enchanted Valley Area. Enchanted Forest has more than 30k of groomed trails for classic and skate cross country skiing and over 15k of trails for snowshoes. Take your dog and explore 5k of trails open to canine friends. There is access to miles of backcountry. They also offer special moonlight ski and snowshoe dinner tours
